Autumn is beautiful on Kinclune Estate. Kinclune House and Osprey Annex are surrounded by mature beech trees, the colours turning from green to yellow and ochre. Beech nuts provide food for our adorable, native red squirrels. This is a wonderful time of the year to visit our dog-friendly, large holiday home or to celebrate a special event, such as a birthday, engagement or anniversary at Kinclune. It would be the best venue for a woodland wedding!
Kinclune House, overlooks Muir of Holm Wood, a haven for wildlife and one of a number of rewilding projects on Kinclune Estate. Planted by the Forestry Commission in the 1960s, we acquired it in 2002 and maintain it for amenity and wildlife, rather than commercial timber production. It is predominantly native species, including Scots Pine, Larch, Rowan and Silver Birch. Guests drive up through the woods when arriving at Kinclune House and are welcome to explore the woods while they stay. It is home to many species of birds, including nesting red kite and buzzard in springtime, bats, pine marten, foxes, badgers, red squirrel and roe deer. We even caught an otter on trailcam at our pine marten feeding station! It is a haven for wildlife.
Unfortunately, during Storm Arwen in 2021, we lost 2000 trees across Kinclune Estate, mainly in this wood. The south-east corner was all but destroyed. We have developed a replanting plan with a sustainable silviculture expert with pockets of Sessile Oak and Silver Birch to ensure its survival for future generations and improve the woodland habitat for our wildlife. It’s going to be a long-term project! We’ll keep you posted.
