Our Location

Kinclune Estate is an idyllic rural location for your next family holiday, weekend getaway, wedding or event. We are located in the east of Scotland, in Angus — just a 40‑minute drive from Dundee, 15 minutes from Kirriemuir (the Gateway to the Glens), 30 minutes from Glen Clova and 45 minutes from Glenshee.

Set in the foothills to the Angus Glens, renowned for its diverse landscapes, you will be surrounded by the very best that Scotland has to offer, from historic castles and mountains to stunning sandy beaches and the beautiful coastline of the east coast of Scotland. Wildlife in the area is particularly outstanding.  

Kinclune Estate makes an ideal base from which to explore the magnificent Angus Glens, Isla, Prosen, Clova and Esk. We are also on the edge of the Cairngorm National Park and within the Cateran Ecomuseum boundary, with excellent, free, pre-designed routes for walking and cycling.

Stay at Kinclune

Kinclune offers a range of holiday accommodation. For larger groups, Kinclune House is a magnificent retreat for up to 14 guests. For smaller groups and families, we have Grieve’s Farmhouse (sleeps 6), and 2 stylish steading cottages – Curlew Cottage (sleeps 4) and Kestrel Cottage (sleeps 4).

Eds Loch, hills and glens near Kinclune Estate in Scotland

Hills & Glens

Kinclune is an ideal base from which to tackle the Angus Glens, Glen Isla, Glen Prosen, Glen Clova and Glen Esk, or to visit the Cairngorm National Park or Glenshee Mountain Centre. During every season there’s plenty to see and do, with stunning landscapes, skiing, walking and wildlife watching (including red deer, ptarmigan, golden eagle and mountain hare).

Glamis Castle near Kinclune Estate

History and Castles

The beautiful A-listed Balintore Castle can be seen from Kinclune, but the area is rich in history from standing stones and rugged ruins to Royal castles and grand estates.

  • Glamis (10 miles) – The outstanding history and spectacle of Glamis Castle, the ancestral home of the late H.M. Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother, is open to the public from March to December.
  • Balmoral Castle (44 miles) – Take a day trip to visit the famous Scottish home of the Royal Family so loved by the late Queen Elizabeth II and His Majesty King Charles III. The grounds, gardens and exhibitions are open April to August with tickets bookable online.

Coasts and Water

  • Lintrathen Reservoir (2.7 miles), RSPB Loch Kinnordy Nature Reserve (4.4 miles) and Backwater Reservoir (6.9 miles) – Kinclune lies between the lochs and they’re where our ospreys fish. Enjoy the landscape, walk, cycle and see the local wildlife. Kinnordy boasts beavers, otter, red squirrel, osprey and breeding marsh harriers, as well as a cycle path to Kirriemuir. Bridgend of Lintrathen, a lovely hamlet on Lintrathen loch, offers the Wee Bear Café and cycle hire.
  • Reekie Lin Waterfall (5 miles) – Visit the beautiful waterfall and enjoy lunch at nearby Peel Farm Tearoom and Farm Shop.
  • Carnoustie (26 miles) – Home of the famous Carnoustie Golf Course.
  • Arbroath (27 miles) – The Arbroath Cliff Trail offers four miles of caves, cliffs, Scottish coastal wildlife and secluded beaches.
  • Montrose Basin (27 miles) – Another bird-watchers paradise, the Montrose Basin Local Nature Reserve is noted for the birds that breed, feed and roost there, including eider, pink-footed geese, mute swans, redshank, lapwing, pintail and wigeon.
  • Lunan Bay (30 miles) – A fantastic two mile stretch of sandy beach perfect for a day out.

Country Sports

Kinclune House is the perfect base for country sports with a fantastic array in the local area, including: bird and wildlife watching; fishing; partridge, pheasant and grouse shooting; deer stalking; and horse riding. Stalking with a local gamekeeper is available on and around Kinclune Estate.

Town of Kirriemuir, Scotland

Kirriemuir

Locally known as ‘Kirrie’, the ‘Gateway to the Glens’ or the ‘Wee Red Toon’ due to the red Kirriemuir sandstone buildings. J.M. Barrie, the author of Peter Pan, was born and buried in Kirrie and gifted the Camera Obscura on Kirrie Hill to the town. Nearby estate, Lindertis, is the family Estate of Sir Hugo Munro, creator of ‘Munro’s Tables’ of Scottish mountains over 3000 ft and originator of Munro bagging. Kirriemuir has an 18-hole golf course and a small selection of shops and places to eat and drink.

Forfar

A traditional market town, Forfar has a charming high street and offers a great selection of shops and supermarkets, including Tesco, Aldi and Lidl. While you’re there, take time to visit the Meffan Museum and walk up Balmashanner Hill to see the Balmashanner Monument. Murton Farm Tea Room, Farm and Nature Reserve are well worth a visit, especially for those with children.
